BAD GIRLS: THE RULES OUR DESIGN TEAM LOVES TO BREAK

Betsy may be bossy with all her design rules, but everyone knows that rules were made to be broken. Even Betsy breaks her own sometimes. So we got to wondering and asked our bad team of designers, “When you go rogue, what’s a design rule you like to break?” Here’s what they said:

Angela

“The design rule that I like to break is the need to have a rug in every room. Some spaces feel over crowded and busy with a rug. Of course, others need the softness of a rug to make the space feel complete but not every room does.”

“Ceiling’s don’t always have to be white! When you don’t want the contrast between the walls with either a low basement ceiling or with high irregular shaped ceilings, I encourage my clients to take their wall color all the way up and over.”

“Avoiding dark paint colors in small spaces. Dark paint is dramatic. In some instances small rooms come alive when washed in deeply saturated paint tones.”

“Mixing warm and cool metals! When done right it adds interest to the design. We’ve seen this a lot lately in kitchens but it works in other rooms as well. Just remember, if you break this rule it’s important to keep the mixture balanced.”
