A lovely home should be a right not a privilege…Betsy Helmuth, Founder, Affordable Interior Design

Hi there…

If you’re looking for affordable, easy to implement design tips right from our designer’s mouths, this blog is for you!

We know many of you are state of confusion when it comes to interior design. Maybe you think you can’t afford to hire a designer so you order furniture on your own. Then, you find it doesn’t fit your space, or maybe it fits but your home but doesn’t function and/or look the way you want it to…

And no matter what items you select (there is usually a whole lot of returning happening at this point) it just isn’t right.

Maybe you love your home but it just needs some finishing touches, or you have questions about what to do with lighting or rugs.

We get it, interior design can be daunting.

But you know what?

We’re here to help!

Uh huh, this is us…an amazing team of designers!

Here, right here, we are going to give you our TOP tips of the moment, right from our designers above, right now.

Here we go…

Make sure your rug is not too small. All front legs of your furniture should be on the rug…Allison

Confused on size? We got ya:

For your dining area be sure all chairs fit on the rug, and, make sure the rug is proportionate to the table…

For the living room area, the most common rug is rectangular. Allison’s tip above applies here—be sure all front legs of your furniture fit on the rug.

For the bedroom, if your bed is queen size, typically a 9’x9’ rug will work.

Oh, and don’t forget the rug pad! It’ll prolong the life of the rug and keep it in place.

Always use lots of ambient light in a room to give it a soothing, cozy feel…Angela

Light = atmosphere. Simple as that. And, you don’t have to spend a lot of money on lighting, either. There are tons of retailers out there that offer affordable lighting, giving you the ability to shine the light in various areas throughout your room.

For ceiling lights, consider a dimming option. Set that mood, if the moment strikes!

Layering is key to making your home feel well, homey. Adding throw pillows, blankets, wall decor, and candles, will make your space feel personalized and complete… Ashley

Layering isn’t just for sweaters, it’s for your home, too. And you know what? One of the best things about layering is you can change it up according to the season.

Try a heavier throw made of cozy wool in the winter, lighter linen decorative pillows in the summer. You get our drift. These pieces are key, but not super expensive (unless you want them to be but that’s another story!)

A home with several tasteful pieces of furniture and a few knick-knacks, will be more inviting than one overflowing with high-end furniture and too many decorations and stuff…Bita

Less is more. Cheesy? Nope, true! Really, it is.

It’s not about the price tag. Money DOES NOT equal taste! No it does not.

Go for the Goldilocks here. Affordable design and tasteful accents = just right!

Avoid dining room sets—rather think about making a contrast between your table and chairs with either style, color/finish or both…Jeanie

Express yourself! Don’t go all matchy-matchy. Decor looks more personal and unique when you mix it up a bit. Maybe find a table you love at your favorite retailer, then look for chairs at a garage sale.

This goes for the rest of your house. That chair in the living room doesn’t have to matchy-match your sofa…

Use a decorative mirror to reflect the light from a window by placing it on the opposite wall…Paulina

Is your space small? Does it lack natural light? Nothing a mirror can’t fix. They’re an affordable option to artwork, too.

Last but not least…ottoman empire!

Small ottomans and poufs are a great multifunctional piece to have in your living room. Not only do they act as comfortable foot rests, but they can be used as extra seating when needed…Stephanie

Multi-functional? Check! Cozy? Check! Decorative? Check! Space-saving? Check! The mighty ottoman does it all. Need we say more?

So there you have it. Some amazing tips from the mouths of our designers.
