We are a small team of superstars.
Our designers have worked at high-end places (Armani, Thom Filicia, Inc., The Metropolitan Museum, Soho Grand Hotel, etc.) where we spent thousands on furnishings from exclusive boutiques for our clients.
But that's not where we shopped for ourselves. We translated luxe looks to fit our budgets at places like West Elm, Overstock, & Ikea. In 2005, our founder had an ah-ha moment: "Let's do this for our friends, our family, everyone we know!"
And, just like that, Affordable Interior Design was born. Our passion is creating upscale looks--for so much less!
Betsy Helmuth is the owner of Affordable Interior Design and a nationally celebrated interior designer. She has appeared on the Today Show, HGTV, DIY Network, CBS, NBC, and in dozens of magazines and newspapers. She penned a popular DIY design book, “BIG DESIGN, SMALL BUDGET, Create a Glamorous Home in Nine Thrifty Steps” (Skyhorse), and hosts a weekly home decorating podcast (syndicated on iTunes) by the same name.
Her firm has grown to serve clients in New York City, New Jersey, Westchester, Long Island, and parts of the Hudson Valley. Betsy also helps clients virtually in other parts of the country with online classes and a weekly Facebook Live chat where she dishes out design wisdom for free.
Allison Rachlis came to Affordable Interior Design after a 7-year career at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, where she served as Associate Director of Visual Merchandising and Store Design. With a B.S. in Interior Design from Syracuse University and experience at a high-end residential design firm on Madison Avenue, she also spent time at Ethan Allen and Restoration Hardware helping clients achieve a sophisticated look on a budget.
Combining her space planning expertise and years of experience perfecting the art of getting a high-end look for less, she helps clients in the tri-state area create the perfect interiors for their lifestyle.
Here are a few of Allison's recent projects:
Paulina Grzechnik holds a degree in Interior Design from The Art Institute of New York City. She also studied Interior Engineering in Warsaw, Poland. Paulina has worked at the architectural and landscape design firm Thread Collective and later at SPArchitects creating interiors that were functional and inviting.
She also worked in a high-end retail and a design studio in SoHo where she designed custom Italian kitchens and baths. Paulina began working with her own clients and has designed residential projects varying from small decorating projects to top to bottom renovations.
Here are a few of Paulina's recent projects:
Kelsey Surock is a graduate from Pratt Institute with a BFA in Interior Design. She also studied Interior Architecture and Urban Design at DIS in Copenhagen, Denmark. She previously worked for the Giorgio Armani where she took part in the design of the Armani Store on 5th Avenue as well as working on residential spaces for their VIP clients.
She began painting murals and working on landscape projects for commercial and residential spaces throughout NYC. After studying indoor and outdoor design, she discovered that by combining both elements, a beautiful design concept can transform a space into a livable work of art.
Here are a few of Kelsey's recent projects:
“We really want to express how very happy we were with Paulina. The chemistry between us and her was right from the moment she entered and we thoroughly enjoyed working with her. We are a couple with different tastes and she managed to navigate that so well, making us both very happy with the final product.
Our experience with Affordable Design was excellent.”
“Allison R. is just AMAZING! She really knows what she is doing. She pays attention to details, she listens and really is able to understand the vision that the client has in mind.
If you emailed her, she responded right away. I asked her for several options and she always delivered with no hesitation. We are always hosting friends because we are so excited to share our lovely space with others.”
“My apartment was desperate for a spruce up. Even though it is not my final stomping ground, I still wanted to invest in an entertainment space to invite guests. I do not have a gift for design so I needed help finding the right resources at the right price. That’s when I found Affordable Interior Design.
I am really happy with the results. I will definitely call them when I move again.”
