Founder & Senior Designer
Betsy Helmuth is the owner of Affordable Interior Design and a nationally celebrated interior designer. She has appeared on the Today Show, HGTV, DIY Network, CBS, NBC, and in dozens of magazines and newspapers.
Allison Rachlis came to Affordable Interior Design after a 7-year career at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, where she served as Associate Director of Visual Merchandising and Store Design. She helps clients create the perfect interiors for their lifestyle.
Paulina Grzechnik holds a degree in Interior Design from The Art Institute of New York City. She also studied Interior Engineering in Warsaw, Poland. Paulina has worked at the architectural and landscape design firm Thread Collective and later at SPArchitects creating interiors that were functional and inviting.

+ Do you work outside Washington DC?
Yes! We regularly work in:

- Greenwich, CT
- Stamford, CT
- and more!
We travel anywhere within 45 minutes of NYC using mass transit or 30 minutes via car. If you are outside that range, there is a chance we may still come to your area but there will be a travel fee.
Additionally, we offer a Virtual Transformation option for people who live more than 1 hour outside of NYC. We've designed in Colorado, San Francisco, Argentina, Israel, and India! All you need is a phone, a measuring tape, and an Internet connection. Call us to discuss the details of this package.
+ Where do you source the furnishings?
We source from hundreds of different vendors, depending on your budget and style preferences. We only use items that can be purchased online.
Most of the items are also offered in retail stores so you can go sit on/jump on/experience the pieces (i.e. Room and Board, Ikea, Crate and Barrel, West Elm, Target, Anthropologie, Macy's, Arhaus, and many more.)
Certain pieces, however, are only available online (i.e. Overstock, Wayfair, VivaTerra, RugsDirect, AllModern, BurkeDecor, etc.)
When we source from online-only vendors, we try to use sites that have free/low-cost shipping and free returns.
We do not recommend things that cannot be found online (i.e. things from small boutiques, thrift stores, or auction houses) as we cannot guarantee that the items will still be in stock when you are ready to buy.
We do not usually use flash sale sites because their items sell out quickly, and they do not have flexible return policies.
At some of the vendors, we are eligible for a trade discount of up to 40%. You can access those discounts through our Designer Discount Shopping Service.
+ When do you take appointments?
We work 7 days a week between 9:30am-7:30pm.
+ Do you mark-up the prices of the items you recommend for us?
Never! Nor do we have special affiliations with only specific vendors. We recommend pieces that are perfect for your space based on your style/budget. We look for the best deals on every item we select and send you the direct link on the retailer's site. We are all about transparency and affordability.
+ Do you handle renovations?
Yes! We consult on renovations. Need help picking out your tile, cabinets, flooring? We would love to guide your selections. Check out our Renovation Consultation Package. However, we don't manage the contractors or the reno work.
